Charlie Dixon Counsellor

I offer an integrative approach to my counselling work and am a fully registered Member of the British Association of Counsellors & Psychotherapists. (BACP).

I have worked in the care professions for over 30 years, including the delivery of support services in the areas of homelessness, rehabilitation of ex-offenders, alcohol and drugs, mental health and learning disabilities.

My decision to train as a counsellor followed 10 years working as a qualified and accredited family mediator. I have also been involved in the development of support services to carers. This has given me a broad spectrum of experience working with people from all backgrounds and I have always found this work stimulating and rewarding. I believe I can bring this experience into my counselling work and provide an increased empathy and knowledge to my work with clients.

I am approachable and develop comfortable and trusting relationships easily with people. I am flexible and non-judgemental in my approach and can establish rapport quickly and effectively with my clients. I have a professional interest in supporting people through change and to achieve higher levels of well-being.

I really enjoy face to face work and believe it is a great privilege to be able to support people to make change. I understand that for my clients to work openly and honestly with me may involve them disclosing personal experiences that may painful, embarrassing or distressing. My clients will always receive my full commitment and respect. Feedback from my clients has always been really positive.

Certified Practitioner of NLP Inspiring Action (ABNLP, ANLP) 2008

Hypnotherapy

I completed my Advanced Practitioners Certificate in Hypnotherapy in 2016. I have developed my practice to achieve excellent outcomes for dental and flight phobias, weight loss, exam stress, smoking cessation, and coping with social anxiety.

Family Mediation

I completed my training as a Family Mediator in 2010 and then obtained my full FMC accredited Mediator status two years later in 2012. I love the challenge of mediation work because you are supporting people to make really hard decisions about their children, home and finances during periods of high conflict and emotional distress.

Counselling & Psychotherapy

Most recently I have qualified as a BACP Accredited Counsellor / psychotherapist. I would describe my style of counselling as follows:

  • Client led
  • Great importance placed on individual freedom, choice and responsibility. Focused on strong relational depth between client and counsellor.
  • Facilitative of change and independence.
  • Non-prescriptive but likely to take a solution focused approach.
  • Informative and supportive.
  • Cognitive approach in its approach.
  • Significantly integrative of TA and Gestalt as an inherent part of its approach.
  • Inclusive of family and social systems.
  • Flexible in its approach to include creative work.

Overall, I would describe my personal philosophy and integrative model of counselling as follows:

  • Essentially humanistic, but drawing on psycho-dynamic & behavioural theory.
  • Broadly existential in its philosophy – with great importance placed on individual freedom, choice and responsibility.
  • Client led but not person-centred, with strong emphasis on relational depth.
  • Fundamentally reparative and facilitative of change and independence. Non-prescriptive but likely to take a solution focused approach.
  • Often cognitively focused in its approach, using reviews of process and contract to consider progress.
  • Significantly integrative of TA and Gestalt as an inherent part of its approach.
  • Inclusive of the family and social systems of clients’ fields of reference.
  • Flexible in its approach to include creative work.
